This project is a desk-based study to produce a snapshot of current practice both in Civil and Building Engineering and across engineering disciplines in the sector. Programme Directors and a number of module leaders across the School of Civil and Building Engineering have been interviewed, to discover in which modules critical thinking skills are taught and/or assessed. A small survey of students was also analysed to discern what students understand by critical thinking and whether they feel more explicit teaching of these skills is desirable.
The findings were collated into a report, describing the School's current position on critical thinking skills for their students, and identifying where these are taught and assessed across the degree programmes. Strategies to reinforce critical thinking throughout the undergraduate programme are suggested, based on a study of the pedagogical literature, and case studies from other institutions.
